Hey guys! So im looking to refresh the suspension on my impala as its a bit stiff and basic riding. Im looking for something a bit softer and less harsh. Any recommendations? Nothing fancy, no air ride or what have you. What want better riding stuts and shocks.

Take any money you’re thinking of throwing at improvements on that and just put it in you savings account. It’s not worth trying. Then you’ll have more money to throw at a more interesting car later on.

Sorry, it’s just that we had a 2004 Impala (and I’ve been in several others) and they’re just not meant to be interesting cars. I actually own a W-body myself, but it’s a ‘96 Grand Prix coupe. The suspension in that is a little “sportier” than the Impala’s. I ordered my front struts on Rockauto.com and just got the “heavy duty” stuff. Works well. But it’ll give you a stiffer ride. If you’re trying to get a comfy ride... uh... I don’t know. Look at what W-body Buicks (LeSabre, I think?) use?

I used KYB on my 04 Imp, they were significantly better than stock and offered a minute amount of adjustmet.

Ive always maintained that Moog is normally among the best suspension wise and is normally if not always better than OEM. Now KYB isnt bad but normally they are shocks/struts only

Improvement has little to do with it. It’s at 77k and 100k suspension refresh is coming up. Its general maintenance. I just dont want OEM if i can get a better ride than what OEM offered on these base spec cars. The lesaber runs the fe1, which puts air in the rear. So thats not really what I want to get into. Haha just looking for something better than OEM to replace with.

Where they smoother? The stocks just ride way too stiff.

Ive gone kyb on paat cars, for a sportier feel. I wonder if they have anything in the softer direction

Smoother is so suggestive, your and my tastes will differ greatly. Stiff usually means too much dampening (Mostly on compression side). The KYB’s are adjustable so set as you like. IIRC they had both high/low speed and compression/ rebound adjustments so you can set them as you like. I personally like a bit firmer of a ride so I had mine set pretty firm. W body stock suspension sucks, you will not regret changing to nearly anything aftermarket. After install on my ‘04, I was much happier and my wife even approved of the improved ride.

that’s a valid point. The stock ones are just rock hard. there’s no real forgiveness in them. very stiff and jarring when on less than smooth roads. so yeah basically just want something more forgiving and softer.
